4 Minute Fitness with ROM at Santa Barbara Pilates and Fitness

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

For those that want to establish a regular fitness routine but have trouble finding the time, the Range Of Motion (ROM) machine is a perfect solution. By engaging more muscles than are engaged through the use of a bike, a rowing machine, and a stair climber combined, the ROM allows people of any fitness level to get a thorough cardio, strength and flexibility workout in only 4-8 minutes. A standard session consists of 4 minutes for the lower body and 4 minutes for the upper body with a 2 minute cool down period in between. Those wanting a less strenuous workout alternate lower and upper body sessions throughout the week.

When people first hear about the ROM many can’t believe that a 4-8 minute workout could be so effective. But by maximizing the range of muscles used, the ROM causes your body to work harder and reach its peak oxygen consumption faster than in any other conventional workout. By engaging your body’s muscles in their full range of motion the ROM involves approximately 44% of all your muscle cells in the consumption of oxygen. This is 12 times as many muscle cells as are engaged during walking or running. A USC Study conducted by Department of Exercise Sciences Interim Chairman Robert Girandolam showed that the effectiveness of 4 minute and 8 minute per day exercise on the ROM is equal to or better than 20 to 45 minutes on a treadmill 3 to 5 times per week.

Another innovation that makes the ROM so effective is its ability to continually adjust itself to each person’s strength and endurance. It does this through a centrifugal brake built into the flywheel at the center of the machine. The more exertion a person puts on the machine the faster the flywheel spins, and this increases the resistance the brake creates. With this technology the ROM is able to start you out easy, allow you to warm up, and then ask you to work harder. Likewise, a person of greater strength will receive more resistance from the machine and have to work harder than a weaker person. No matter what level of fitness you start with or how your strength increases or diminishes during your workout, the ROM will always respond with the perfect level of resistance, thus maximizing the effectiveness of your workout. With this revolutionary technology the machine is equally appropriate for a senior, a professional athlete, one quite out of shape and somebody at the highest level of fitness.

The painstaking and precise process that goes into the construction of the ROM explains its $14,615 retail price. Unfortunately, this is a price that most people can’t afford. The good news is that we’ve purchased one for use at Santa Barbara Pilates and Fitness Studio and it’s available for anyone to use. We offer a variety of affordable 4 to 8 week packages that include 20 to 80 ROM sessions lasting a maximum of 10 minutes each. For anybody who has difficulty working a fitness routine into their schedule or who wants to minimize the time they devote to fitness for whatever reason, the ROM is a fantastic option and we’re happy to make it available.

Visit sbpilates.com for more information on the ROM, the types of packages we offer, and a video demonstration of the machine in use.

The Santa Barbara Pilates ROM Machine

ROM Machine – Santa Barbara Pilates & Fitness

Everyone knows America is the land of convenience. From fast food to internet shopping, play-on-demand movies, and drive-through coffee shops, we’re gluttons for instant gratification, and not only when it comes to consumption. We also demand instant results when it comes to our fitness, and that’s a tall order when it comes right alongside a Quarter Pounder with fries.

Leave it to Hollywood to come up with the instant fitness solution: the ROM four-minute cardio cross-trainer. Retailing at $14, 615, the ROM (Range of Motion) machine is a piece of equipment not unlike a combination of the step machine and rowing machine you’ll find in your average gym—at least in appearance. Its promise, though, is unique: Work out on the ROM for four minutes a day and you’ll be fitter than if you’d gone to the gym each day for an hour.

As a daily exerciser, my curiosity was piqued, so I headed out to the Santa Barbara Pilates Studio to test one of the city’s few ROMs. Owner Kristen Williams ushered me inside and within minutes put me to work on the upper-body portion of the machine. Four minutes later I was sweating and breathing deeply, my muscles burning. Since I wouldn’t be back the next day, she put my lower body through its paces as well, for a total of eight minutes of exercise.

I’ve been back for two more ROM workouts since, and they always leave me feeling energized, whether or not I really burn more calories than in my regular 45 minutes of trail running or kickboxing. The truth is, I don’t actually care that much about maximizing my workout’s efficiency; I exercise because I love the way it feels, it’s social, and it’s a way of life. But if you think the four-minute full-body workout sounds too good to be true, there’s only one way to find out.

Mission Accomplished

Christopher Hitchens

The author submits to the ROMmaster. “Exercise. When you are still smoking, this doesn’t really come up.… What about a nice game of tennis? Are you by any chance joking?

The keratin hair-repair treatment, originating in Brazil like so many things in the world of body fur, is now being popularized by rug stars like Roche and Peter Coppola. It essentially shrink-wraps your hair and leaves it both thicker and (if your problem is unruly curliness) straighter, which is odd since the principal ingredient is derived from sheep’s wool. There’s no big deal; it’s sort of painted on and then left to dry for about 20 minutes, with the result that my hair doesn’t frizz out when the weather turns humid, can be combed or brushed in such a way as to lie flat and in general stay put, and doesn’t look as if I’ve been trying anything fancy. So, two thumbs up to that.

Why ROM

Subject: Re: Exercise Machine That Does The Same Thing As The ROM Machine Cheaper.
From: bb_bb-ga on 22 Oct 2005 23:56 PDT

There is no comparable machine at this time at any price. Though ROM
is hideously expensive, it does work.

My wife and I purchased one 11 weeks ago (after a rental trial).
Results: my blood pressure down > 10 points, lost 10 pounds, greatly
increased muscle mass and stamina. I do not get paid to say this (ROM
costs >
$15k with shipping! Ouch!!), but it has worked for me and my
significantly less athletic wife.

The ACLs in both my knees are damaged or destroyed, my r. shoulder has
had multiple dislocations and his ‘tricky’, and my lower and mid back
have been injured in the past. 24 months ago, I had a major stroke,
and am now 50 years old. So I desperately needed the exercise for
general health, and needed to strenghten my leg/back/trunk muscles to
support my various injuries and minor stroke related weaknesses.

My Knees, shoulder, and back are much improved, as is the minor
weakness due to stroke.

You do have to use the machine almost every day, and should push
yourself to exhaustion when doing so; but it only takes 4 takes
minutes, and this makes it relatively easy to do. And you get the
exercise ‘buzz’ (high?) of a strenuous workout.

If you do not believe you can get a workout in 4 minutes, read the
literature on the ROM page, or get the DVD. If you claim a 4 minute
workout is not effective, and have not examined this information, then
you are not aware of what recent medical studies have shown. Examine
the info, you will be surprised. I know it sounds totally nuts, but
some crazy ideas are true (examples: Genereal Relativity and Quantum
Strangeness).

I recommend examining the principals behind high intensity training
before making a judgment or sweeping statements saying it cannot work.

PS: If $15K can help keep me from having another stroke, I’ll gladly pay the money.

ROM 4 Minute Cardio Cross Trainer

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

1. How can you possibly get a cardio workout in only 4 minutes per day when almost all people, including most “experts” apparently, believe that a cardiovascular workout requires at least 20 to 45 minutes?

TIME REQUIREMENT FOR A CARDIO WORKOUT

ROM
ROM Machine

The time required for an effective cardio-vascular exercise depends on the degree of oxygen consumption during the workout. The greater the amount of oxygen consumption during the workout, the shorter the required duration of a cardio workout. In other words, the quality of the workout determines the time required. More muscle cells involved means higher oxygen consumption means less time required. In fact the time requirement is exponentially less when the oxygen consumption increases in a linear fashion. The ROM enables even totally out of shape people and seniors to achieve much higher oxygen consumption levels than with ANY OTHER FORM OF CONVENTIONAL EXERCISE and therefore they can shorten their exercise periods while getting superior results.

Oxygen consumption is expressed in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (mlO2/kg/min). With conventional forms of exercise it is nearly impossible for the untrained general public to reach the high levels of oxygen consumption required for a short and effective cardio workout. With the ROM machine untrained individuals will easily reach the very high levels of oxygen consumption that require only minutes for an effective aerobic workout that yields the same or better cardiovascular benefits than the conventional 20 to 45 minute aerobic workouts practiced by the general public. To understand this, you need to read and understand the following lengthy technical explanation:

THE MYTH OF 20 TO 45 MINUTES

Most everyone believes (incorrectly so) in the myth that a cardio workout requires at least 20 to 45 minutes per day. The truth is that if you want to improve strength, flexibility and cardio vascular endurance, that you must do slight damage to each of these systems by putting a slight overload on them. An overload on the muscles will create micro tears in the muscles that will in the repair process cause the muscles to become stronger. An overload on the tendons will create small damage by creating a very mild tendonitis and that will create more flexibility during the healing process of the tendonitis. An overload on the cardiovascular system is measured by way of total oxygen consumption during an exercise period. It can be low oxygen consumption during a long period of time or a very high oxygen consumption during a short period of time to reach the overload. An added advantage of a high oxygen consumption during a short time is that the length of time required for a cardiovascular workout becomes exponentially shorter with a linear increase of oxygen consumption.

See our ROM pages for more info.

Because all of this sounds to good to be true we offer the first 4 sessions for free to anyone that is not sure or on the fence. Come try it. You to will become a believer of the ROM 4 minute Cardio Workout Machine.
